Lithuanian Eugenijus Kavaliauskas, using a microscope with fivefold zoom, could show how an ant's face looks up close. The result surpassed all expectations and an ant looks like a shot from a scary movie.
Science Alert reports about it.
The picture was awarded the title of Outstanding Image at the Small World Photomicrography Competition 2022.
The photo shows the jaws and antennae of Camponotus, a common woodworm ant.
These insects nest inside a tree. They feed on dead insects, nectar, and honeydew secreted by aphids.
The red luminous eyes in the picture are in reality the bases of the ant's antennae, while the yellow teeth are very small "trigger hairs" that the wood ants use for sensing the world around them.
