Cormac McCarthy died on Tuesday, June 13, of natural causes at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, according to Penguin Random House publisher Alfred A. Knopf.
The writer was 89 years old.
Cormac McCarthy is considered one of America's most influential and renowned writers for his harsh and dark portrayal of the United States and its borderlands in his novels.
Literary critics have called McCarthy the "true heir" to Herman Melville and William Faulkner.
His writing career spanned almost six decades. He authored a dozen novels, some of which became commercial hits according to critics. Several of his works have been adapted into films.
In 2007, Cormac McCarthy was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his post-apocalyptic science fiction novel "The Road."
Director John Hillcoat adapted the book into a film with Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee in the lead roles.
McCarthy gained worldwide fame and recognition with his first novel, "Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West" (1985).
The novel ranked third on the list of the greatest American novels of the last quarter of the 20th century.
His next notable novel that resonated worldwide was "All the Pretty Horses" (1992), which, along with its sequels "The Crossing" (1994) and "Cities of the Plain" (1998), formed The Border Trilogy.
The Coen brothers adapted McCarthy's novel "No Country for Old Men" into a film (2005) starring Javier Bardem, which received 75 film awards, including four Oscars.
McCarthy's screenplays also include the TV movie "The Sunset Limited" (2011) directed by Tommy Lee Jones, in which Jones and Samuel L. Jackson played the lead roles.
In 2013, Ridley Scott directed the film "The Counselor" based on McCarthy's screenplay, featuring Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, and Javier Bardem in the lead roles.
"Cormac McCarthy altered the course of literature for six decades, demonstrating unwavering dedication to his craft and exploring the boundless possibilities and power of the written word.
Millions of readers around the world embraced his characters, his mythic themes, and the intimate emotional truths he illuminated on every page in his brilliant novels that will remain relevant and timeless for future generations," said Nihar Malaviya, CEO of Penguin Random House, in a statement.
In late 2022, McCarthy's last two novels, "Passenger" and "Stella Maris," were published in the United States.
