ABC News reports on the mysterious tunnel in the Mojave Desert in the southwestern United States, which has been there since 1906.
This enigmatic place still remains a mystery to all. It is a tunnel (2,087 meters long) that literally leads to nowhere, dug by a man named William Henry Schmidt over a span of 38 years.
None of those who knew William Henry Schmidt were aware of his passion, which soon earned him the nickname "The Mole Man."
It was only later, after the tunnel was discovered, that someone asked him why he had been doing it.
It turned out he was simply trying to shorten something. Although no one ever understood exactly where he wanted to make a shortcut to.
According to the publication, in 1906, Schmidt was diagnosed with tuberculosis. That's why he ended up in the desert, supposedly to improve his health.
Even under favorable conditions, his life was limited in time. That's why he became so dedicated to working on the tunnel and eventually disappeared.
Local residents were greatly concerned, so the next morning, the local sheriff and a few people arrived at the tunnel to help.
They only went a few dozen meters in and then decided to turn back out of fear of being buried alive.
