Streaming service Netflix released a video introducing the cast of the sequel.

It will feature both the beloved characters that viewers have already come to love and new characters who have the potential to become new favorites, as the modern youth would say.

What the second season will be about

The series "Squid Game," which premiered in September 2021, immediately broke all records. In just the first month, over 142 million Netflix viewers watched the Korean drama.

It was recognized as the most original project of this streaming platform in 94 countries around the world.

The story of a kind-hearted, impoverished oddball named Seong Gi-hun, who wins millions of dollars by winning a deadly game, resonated with audiences in practically every corner of the planet.

It's no wonder that discussions about the second season began even before the first one ended.

Initially, the director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, brushed off the talks, confessing that the project had taken too much out of him, and he would drink half a bottle of soju (Korean alcoholic beverage) to unleash his creativity. But in the end, he gave in.

Of course, the first character whose return Hwang Dong-hyuk promised was Seong Gi-hun.

As early as September 2022, the director announced that if "in the first season, the humanity of the main character was displayed in a passive manner, then in the second, the character's experience will be used actively."

The actor who portrays Seong Gi-hun, Lee Jeong-jae, also confirmed that his character will become braver and more determined but won't lose the qualities of being a fun and funny guy that audiences have grown fond of.

Hwang Dong-hyuk also promised that in the continuation of the drama, the host of the game in the first season, Hwang In-ho (played by actor Lee Byung-hun), who once also won in a deadly competition and then became its host, will be revealed.

Recall that he wore a mask in the series, and viewers knew nothing about this character until he revealed his face to his brother, the police officer Hwang Jun-ho (played by actor Wi Ha-jun), in the finale.

By the way, the filming of the second season has already begun and is expected to last approximately ten months. The series is planned to be released in the fall of 2024.
