When her mother died, her father didn't want to be bothered with a little child.

He took her to her grandmother, left the little girl in front of the gate, and drove away in an unknown direction.

Grandmother Anna was in the barn and didn't see the approaching car, she only heard the door slam and the car drive off.

"Who could it be?" thought grandmother as she went to see. When she reached the gate, she saw the little girl.

Her granddaughter was standing by the fence, holding onto it.

"Well, Jirka is a fool, he threw the child here and left. He could have at least said something," said grandmother Anna and took her granddaughter home.

In the evening, grandfather Petr returned from the field, and when he saw his granddaughter, he asked:

"So? Did Jirka come?"

"Well, of course, he did. He threw Dashenka over the fence and drove away. People are right when they say that nobody needs a child except for the mother. What is happening with the youth?"

They discussed the current morality for a long time, and when it was dark, they went to sleep.

Over time, the grandparents raised their granddaughter the best they could. In their own way, in the old-fashioned way. They taught her to respect people, to love nature, and how to manage things properly.

Dasha grew up quickly and became a good helper for her grandmother and grandfather.

Grandmother Anna and grandfather Petr couldn't get enough of looking at their granddaughter, who resembled her mother. She was always trying to help with everything.

Even though their daughter was absent, they still held only the best memories of her.

"Look," said grandmother to grandfather, "she will soon finish school, and she will become a bride."

One evening, grandfather Petr initiated a conversation.

"Babi, Dagmar has grown up. She's finishing school with honors, and she might have to study somewhere else. She's smart, isn't she?"

"Why study? The time will come, and she will marry someone and live nearby us."

"No, it won't work like that. Times have changed. Without education, you won't get anywhere."

"You're right," agreed grandmother Anna.

They took out the last money they had saved for a funeral and sent their granddaughter to the city to study.

Dagmar went to study economics, graduated with honors, and returned to the village. The city didn't impress her.

The grandparents were pleased with her return and that she hadn't forgotten about them.

Dagmar decided to build up the village and engage in agriculture. She obtained land, a loan, and hired people. She built a good farm and bought cows.

However, there weren't enough people, so she wrote an advertisement stating that she needed workers. She promised good pay and provided housing.

There weren't many interested applicants, but one man appeared. Dirty, unshaven, dressed in torn clothes, he looked as if his life had been ruined.

He came to Dashenka and said he was her father. He didn't ask her for anything, not even for money because he understood that he couldn't abandon the child and just come after twenty-five years and say, "Forgive me."

The father only asked for one thing because he was alone and nobody needed him. He hoped that maybe he could help his daughter with some work.

Jirka said all of this and cried.

His daughter forgave him, but not right away, after several months.

Since then, the father has been living next to his daughter.
