Oscar-winning American actress Angelina Jolie will embody the character of the American singer of Greek origin, one of the greatest opera singers of the XX century Maria Callas in a biographical drama by Chilean director Pablo Larraín, who directed the biographical films "Spencer" (about Princess Diana) and "Jackie" (about the wife of President John F. Kennedy), reports Hollywood Reporter.
The film with the working title "Maria", based on real events, will tell the "tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story" of the life of one of the greatest opera singers in the world, re-experienced and reinterpreted in her last days in Paris in the 1970s.
The script for the film is written by the creator of "Sharp Visors" Stephen Knight, who worked with Larraín on the film "Spencer".
The film will be produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula Pictures, Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, Fremantle and Jonas Dornbach for Komlizen Film.
The 47-year-old actress is looking forward to filming:
"I take the responsibility for Maria's life and legacy very seriously. I will do everything in my power to cope with this task. Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. It's a dream come true to have the opportunity to tell more of Maria's story with him and with Stephen Knight's script."
Larraín, in turn, said:
"The opportunity to combine two of my deepest and most personal passions, film and opera, has been a long-awaited dream. To do it with Angelina, an extremely brave and curious actress, is a wonderful opportunity. A real gift."
Jolie is currently in post-production on her fifth film as director, No Blood, the first under a new three-year contract she signed with Fremantle Television.
