Collecting scraps is natural for animals. In addition, for centuries, dogs were kept outside in stables, fed by throwing scraps or pieces of game from a communal hunt onto the ground.

Collecting leftover food is a problem for owners, but not for dogs.

As reported: Fakta.today

Nobody argued about whether it is or is not physiological to feed a dog from a bowl on a stand, or how to properly wipe their whiskers.

Recently, dogs have moved to our mats and picking up food from the ground has suddenly become prohibited.

Leave those ugly things alone

Dogs that eat only dog food have not been able to digest anything other than that. They had gastrointestinal tracts blown out by parts of offal in the bushes.

Every one of us dog owners fears those who hate them.

What to do?

How do you teach your pet not to pick up ugly things from the ground?

Have you tried all the commands and options to pull away, pre-emptively avoid likely waste spots and nothing helps?

But the experts believe that all the "rubbish" leads only to one thing: dogs learn quickly, cunningly, unnoticed.

They don't approach their owner until they've eaten it.

After all, it will certainly take it and eat it (well, what else would a dog think?).

How do you throw back into the trash a tasty, rotten mackerel? You're right, it's impossible.

Dogs learn to guard their prey: clench their jaws, growl and even bite.

Furthermore, the dog can transfer this behavior to other aspects of life because it quickly discovers that it works well.

This is what turns a walk into a competition to see who can find the trash on the ground faster, and there's no point in competing with a dog's sense of smell and speed.

What not to do

Add something to your dog while enjoying the leftovers of grilled chicken in the bushes?

Four-legged dogs have no general idea of what's going on.

And after you throw an object in one place, the dog will know that this wonderful thing is the only place it would rather not eat.

The owner should know: our pets learn - understand after about 500 repetitions.

That means you have to throw something at your beloved dog at least 500 times.

Do you want to walk with a leash in your hand and throw it at your beloved dog?

Your dog will likely start to fear you before it learns anything.

Has your four-legged friend learned the "Leave those ugly things" command, but sometimes you don't have time to say it?

Learning not to pick up food from the ground

The work on the behavior you want to change should be divided into two blocks.

First - passive avoidance of the problem, inability to do what it wants to do (find and eat). In this option, you will do the following:

do not visit places where there is food on the ground (which is almost impossible)
give the dog a muzzle.

Then you work on behavior. The main disadvantage is that the owner now wants to solve the problem.

So, what to do if the dog picks up food (a bone) from the ground? Nothing!

So let's create a plan to work on our pet's behavior:

Work on the dog's state

Leashed, oriented towards the owner, wanting to be in contact with him, ability to prioritize him on the street.

Basic obedience work

Calling, commands, endurance training before the mission.

Ability to control impulses

You refuse thrown food, rather than catching a piece on command, you don't react to food that you push with your feet.
