If you're heading to your summer cottage with your pet, make sure there are no plants that are harmful to them on the premises, or keep your dog away from them to avoid harm to your beloved pet's health.
Lilies
Tiger lilies and daylilies are the most common plants found in the gardens of the mid-latitudes.
Both varieties pose a danger to dogs: even a small amount of sap from the stems and leaves can cause severe poisoning or even death to your pet. Replace these varieties with safe plants like calla lilies or pink lilies, which still look beautiful and won't harm your furry friend.
Crocuses
Colchicine, found in the leaves and stems of crocuses, is deadly poisonous to both dogs and humans. It causes nausea, vomiting, seizures, and respiratory problems.
Make sure your pet doesn't approach these plants, and if you notice that they have consumed the leaves, immediately take them to the veterinarian as symptoms of poisoning may appear several days later.
Oleander
The poison of this plant remains dangerous even after the shrub dries out, or you burn its branches. If oleander sap gets into the eyes, your pet may lose their sight, and ingesting a small piece can lead to the animal's death.
Transplant this picturesque shrub to an area inaccessible to both dogs and children, and always handle this flower with gloves.
Lily of the valley
This spring flower contains a toxin that affects the respiratory and circulatory systems, potentially leading to cardiac arrest in animals. Therefore, don't allow your pets to nibble on lily of the valley.
Chrysanthemum
While this flower repels insects, it is dangerous for animals. Even a small piece of leaf can cause nausea, vomiting, and seizures. Additionally, the scent of chrysanthemums is highly attractive to pets, and they will likely try to snack on the plant.
Therefore, if you regularly bring your dog to the summer cottage, it's best to refrain from planting chrysanthemums on the property.
Onions and garlic
Although they are not considered flowers, these plants are deadly poisonous to dogs. The essential oils in them can induce vomiting in your furry friend. Keep your dogs away from beds with these spices to prevent poisoning.
